Upon acquiring a job, which I start this Monday, I was jolly. However, I have a formidable car drive ahead of me daily, about forty minutes each way. I thought I was going to go crazy with such a long drive, listening only to the car’s engine and perhaps the radio. As if being bored while driving wasn’t a problem in and of itself, I have issues with the radio. Have you listened to the radio recently?
Honestly, terrestrial radio is awful in my opinion. After being spoiled with computers, MP3 players like the iPod, satellite radio, and other technologies, I don’t think many people today can tolerate the selection and quality of terrestrial radio. Of course, people have fought this issue in their cars by taking an MP3 player and attaching a low-powered FM transmitter.
That’s a great solution in my opinion, but I don’t have an MP3 player. I’m notorious for my deficiency of technology on my person. It’s kinda ironic, actually. I love computers and all things technology, but I don’t have a cell phone, MP3 player, or any other handheld piece of technology, including a watch. One day, perhaps, this will change with the iPhone, which I have a lust for.
The thought occurred to me to buy my own MP3 player and an FM transmitter, but I don’t like spending money. Furthermore, I honestly don’t like portable music. Many people listen to their iPods all the time and lock themselves out from society, and others blast out their eardrums to shreds. Although I have the restraint, I’d like to distance myself from that paradigm. Also, I’ve never liked headphone, especially earbuds.
After remembering that my sister had an old 6GB blue iPod Mini, I had an idea. The unit had a broken headphone port, and so in our minds the iPod was virtually useless. Luckily, FM adapters use the iPod’s proprietary data port rather than the headphone port, so after purchasing one of the aforementioned FM adapters, I’m ready to roll. A 6GB hard disk is enough to put my highest rated tracks, all of my podcasts, and a book with room to spare. On my queue is Al Gore’s The Assault on Reason.
I love recycling old stuff. If you have any cool recycling ideas or projects, let me know. Currently, my other pet project is restoring a Power Mac G4 Cube to its former glory and finding a use for it.
