Math is Delicious

MathA t-shirt I ordered came in the mail today!

I love it! It’s from the amazing web comic, Questionable Content, which has been monopolizing my life right now. In the last three days, I’ve gone through more than 400 comics. It’s really entertaining, witty, and intelligent. I can’t wait to catch up.

My Failed Accomplishment

I’ve been writing a résumé of my high school accomplishments, but have been hung up on one major issue in particular. I once started a massive technological project that was promising and successful, until it was eventually undermined by forces out of my control. I wondered if I should mention my participation in the project. Normally, it would be an exemplary story of initiative and skill development; however, it ended in failure. Here we go:

When I was a mere freshman, I was approached by a technical worker whom I was friends with at my high school, and was asked if I had any ideas to get some sort of television-driven announcement distribution system established throughout the school. I had plenty of free time back then, and by the next day I had a decent prototype created. Technically, it was unimpressive – a web page with three frames. The top frame had a clock that updated itself and slowly moved left and right. The middle frame’s loaded a .txt file and scrolled messages up the screen. The bottom frame was a CNN-esque ticker, which also loaded from a .txt file. My idea was that one could remotely access a computer attached to the video feed and launch the web page full screen. Then, he or she would update the .txt files to update the announcements. The master web page would force-refresh itself every 10 minutes to display updates. The system was simple, but elegant. It got the job done, and cost taxpayers nothing. Continue reading ‘My Failed Accomplishment’

Sayonara, Apple Remote

Most computers from Apple today come with an Apple Remote. The Apple Remote allows one to pause or play a track, skip track, adjust volume, and put the computer to sleep. In my computer-centric lifestyle, it’s a lifesaver. I, in fact, had two. I let one float around my bedroom, and the other was held by double-sided tape to a dresser next to my door. Keeping one there let me play or pause the song or podcast I was listening to the second I entered or left the room. Daily, it gave me more minutes of listening time. Nifty.

Did you notice the use of past tense? One of my two Apple Remotes met its untimely demise. I suppose they weren’t meant to make their way into the dryer. Who would have thought?

I’m ordering a replacement. It’s hard to believe that I’ve made a thirty dollar piece of plastic a cornerstone of my life.

I Was a DJ

Last night went wonderfully for Matt and I, co-Dover-DJs. There was a moment of panic when I thought we didn’t have enough music, and another when the speakers were a little finicky. Both issues were eventually non-issues, and most everyone was happy, including me.

Shout-out to stereo equipment from the 70′s, auxiliary speakers from the 90′s, and a MacBook Pro from 2006. [Edit: Additional shout-out to Exposay member J-Rizzle for her help!]

Listen Up!

When someone needs help, I try to come to the rescue. The local SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter in Dover needs a DJ for a middle school dance this Friday, so I offered my limited services. With my friend Matt’s speakers, I’ll be attempting to provide tunes for a bunch of seventh and eighth grade students in less than two days.

Anyone have tips? What’s hip? Also, what’s my DJ name?
