I have recently realized I am suffering from this problem as well. My applecare has been out of date for some time…Do you believe apple will be sympathetic to my plight? I assume your computer was still under the applecare umbrella.
Tony – No one can predict what Apple will do. I was within warranty, so they took care of me. Good luck!
