The Final Meeting

I ran my final meeting at Dover High School last Thursday. In a word, it was bittersweet; it was terribly depressing to bring my Student Council’s year to an end, but I realized that I had reached my prime here at Dover High School.

This particular meeting is usually the most difficult and complicated of the year. Everyone who raises funds in Dover High School traditionally sits down and fights over calendar dates for the next year. There’s yelling and widespread resentment; people leave the room hating each other.

This time, things were different. As I led the meeting, I think I finally grasped the art of leading people. I approached it with a “how can I help you” attitude and it worked beautifully. From the moment I gave my opening remarks, everyone tried to help each other. After all, we were all working for something larger than our individual organizations - the student body.

It’s all about attitude. If you’re running a meeting, stay positive. If you walk into a room with a chip on your shoulder, it’ll poison the room. If something’s bothering you, leave it outside. Your mood has more of an impact than you can even imagine.
