I’m a control freak when it comes to my critical information systems, especially when it comes to managing my email. For years now, I’ve been staring at my “Invite a Friend” Box in my gmail account, and for years, I’ve had no need to invite anyone. I’ve googled for hacks or Google Labs features to remove the box, but never found an acceptable solution.
Then it hit me. If I use up the invites, the box should go away. If it doesn’t have a purpose, a reason to exist, the server gods at Google will surely remove it from my Gmail web interface, right?
Fortunately for me, yes! And all I had to do to claim those pixels was to send 99 gmail invites to myself. Piece of cake.
brillant!
Finally!!! Can’t believe it too me this long to actually search for a way to get rid of that stupid box!
The Firefox add-on “Better Gmail” will do it for you.
Stephen, good point!
Unfortunately, I’m not using Firefox as my primary browser right now. I’m a Safari man, due to the speed of Webkit. Thanks for letting me know, though!
I recently tried a similar thing when I had the same brain wave as you. I invited a random email address 50 times (sorry to to the person who owns that email address) and it disappeared. But then to my suprise it magically reappeared, I’ve just completed the same step again by inviting myself.
@Sean Let us embark on this journey of inbox cleanliness together, seeing if the number of invites will decrease over time.
Thanks for the tip Richard!
I just performed the laborious task of sending myself 99 invites (you can do about 10 at a time before gmail starts complaining of errors) and my OCD is loving the cleaner look.
Cheers!
Well, you can create a long list of email addresses like:
a@b.com, a@b.com….
and clean it up quickly without clicking the button 100 times
I had 91 invites left and I I just tried this trick. After it reached zero it jumped back up to 50 invites.
I’ve got a little pain and rsi in my wrist right now but the invitation box is finally gone. Woohoo!
Little correction, i’ve just threw away 192 invites so actually it gives 2×50 extra invites.
haha…brilliant! wish google dint give you more invites later on
I was doing the same a few weeks ago,(sending out invites to myself)but had given up on it with 60 left as I was very doubtfull if it would work. i just did it another 60 times and then the reward came.
excellent!
If you have another tip for removing the sponsored links, please let the world know
It worked …….. yeaaahhhhhhhh
Thanksss
Thank you for your clever tip Rich!
by the way it’s possible to copy/paste the same email adress several times in the “preview invite” window and send just one batch of invites to some crap address like “help@gmail.com, help@gmail.com, …”
Regards!
Jimmy
Wow, I can’t believe I never thought of this. Thanks for the tip!
It worked, thanks.
Finally they put it back every day…
you send the fake invites, the box is removed for 24 hours, you have to clean the 50 email feedbacks, and they put it back the day after…. we can’t get rid of it?
you dont have to send invites one by one.
